Mitt Romney gave his much awaited speech this past week, and the mainstream media seems to love it, sort of. Well they liked it the first time when it was by JFK. Romney made a point to say to his listeners that he was just a regular Joe American and his religion was not important. Also he stated that America was founded as a Christian nation, and that people of secular (i.e. - agnostics and atheists) were wrong. Hey Mitt, when you decided to try and mirror a great president maybe you should actually listen to what he said. The general premise of Romney’s speech is not surprising, it is a gigantic pander to the religious right in this country. Romney knows that he cannot be honest and say that agnostics and atheist are just as welcome in this country as anyone else, because he is base will crucify him (pun intended). That my friends, is the saddest part of what has become politics in America. The inability to be intellectually honest to your own base. Sad.
Huckabee is surging! Just off his stylish victory over the plethora of loser who are now representing the republican party, he is sitting in the number one spot. Of course, with the title comes the spoils. Unfortunately, the spoils in a primary race are generally nothing you want. He now is being put under a microscope over he past record in Arkansas, as he should. Huckabee the fun loving politician who seems to have all the right things going for him has a closet filled with a few rather large skeletons. The main carcass looming over his Cinderella story is the one of a serial rapist he let go, and who of course raped and killed two women after being released. Letting him go is not the issue, doing it for purely political purposes is another. In a word, disgusting. This story isn’t really hitting mainstream news like I would have liked, but time will tell. The other story that is making some headlines is that fact that Huckabee made several statements that he was in favor of a quarantine of AIDS patiences in the early 90s. Huckabee was questioned on this by Chris Wallace this week and he danced around it with semantics at first and then stood by his statements. The statement to begin with is quite ridiculous, but as a evangelical preacher I am not surprised. I think Huckabee has a real chance to walk away with Iowa without breaking a sweat. However, once people start to see him for what he really is things will change. A candidate who does not believe in evolution will have a hard time getting the final vote from Americans come November ‘08. Until then keep dancing Huckabee, we are just waiting to see if you get tired before we do.

Trent Lott is retiring from the Senate. He is not waiting until the end of his term, he will be jetting at the end of the year. Some say he is leaving early to beat out the new law that stops Senators and Representatives from being lobbyists after leaving office for a few years after leaving their Congressional positions. We’ll see ya later Trent, you won’t be missed, not by me at least. I am sure this guy will make his way back into Washington in due time, he loves it too much.
Fred Thompson goes on Fox News and gives Chris Wallace the 3rd degree. The clip that I saw was pretty interesting. This was the first time I have ever seen a Republican lambaste Fox News for their unfair reporting. Thompson complained that the Fox News channel has been bashing him from day 1 and has never let up no matter what the facts were. Of course Wallace makes no apologies for the channel, and actually kinda bashes Thompson to his face about how bad his campaign is being run. The other Republican candidates better wake up. Fox is only interested in a Guiliani presidency. They will take any other Republican candidate apart at the seams.
Lastly, Ron Paul came out and said that he will not support the GOP in 2008 because they are “too pro-war.” Not surprising from Dr. Paul, he has been the maverick of his party. Also, Dennis Kucinich has not ruled out running with Ron Paul if the situation presented itself. That would be quite interesting.

So there are calls going around in Iowa that are asking people, whether or not they are ok with a mormon candidate’s possible white house victory. The critics think that it might have been sent out from the Guiliani camp, not really surprised there. Some say MCCain’s team could be responsible. However, the greatest rumor is that Romney’s team started this, in order to blame the other republicans for “dirty tricks.” I do understand why the main focus this go-round is on the Dems, but holy shit the Republicans are fighting pretty dirty…very entertaining. Well I guess its a good thing that no one is whispering that McCain has a illegitimate black child this time, but its still early.
The next debate is the Republicans turn and this should be a doozy. They have brought back Alan Keyes for this one! BWAHAHAHAHA that guy is the biggest joke in the Republican party, maybe even politics. I haven’t watched a lot of the Republican debates but I don’t think I will be missing this one. I mean the breakdown of people running for the Republican party is terrible…The only people who stand a chance are sadly Guiliani, Romney, and Huckabee. That reminds me, just like Obama for the Dems, Mike Huckabee has been making quite a surge forward in his campaign in Iowa. He has an ad that features Chuck Norris, I supposed he is going after the internet geek vote. However I think it will do nothing more than backfire on him. He also got pro-wrestler Ric “The Nature Boy” Flair to back him. I guess the Dems will have to get Jet Li and Hulk Hogan to back them. Acquiring pseudo-celebrities to back you is…well useless. I am more interested in their policies than I am there ability to tell Chuck Norris jokes, and poorly I might add. Ron Paul is still doing very well on the internet and seems to be making small strides. While I think he is leaps and bounds above the rest of the Republicans. He does not have a snowball’s chance in hell of pulling out a victory. His views are too vastly different from America’s values and what they hold dear to them.
